At first glance it’s almost impossible to tell the RUX Waterproof Bag is actually a dry bag. It looks more like a stylish tote from one of the big outdoor brands like Patagonia or REI Co-Op. But rather than being just a tote bag, the RUX Waterproof Bag is made with waterproof TPU-coated nylon fabric on the outside and another layer of TPU-coated nylon fabric on the inside that expands up-and-out of the “tote” bag with a waterproof roll top closure.
TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) is a material that is similar to PVC (polyvinyl chloride), but lighter weight, more flexible, doesn’t produce harmful by-products or require softening plasticizers during production, and has no unpleasant odor like new PVC. It’s also easily recyclable.
The TPU material makes the RUX Waterproof Bag extremely light for its large, 25L, capacity. It’s also made with welded seams for increased durability. How durable you ask? I’ve not seen a single misaligned seam, stitch, or nor scuff after throwing it around for the last week or so. Plus, RUX’s entire focus is on developing products designed to outlast the competition and be repairable in the field. They also guarantee the Waterproof Bag for life. I’m going to give that one a big Five-Stars for durability.
Features & Versatility
The RUX Waterproof Bag is more than just another dry bag. It has features for daily use, and can integrate with RUX’s complete storage ecosystem.
At first I was confused by the RUX Waterproof Bag. I stared at it and tried “closing” the bag a few times with no success. After all, isn’t this supposed to be waterproof? But after more minutes than I’d care to admit I finally had my “aha” moment when I saw the buckles sitting in the bottom of the bag. The RUX does close – I just hadn’t opened the bag all the way yet!
This is a really clever feature of the RUX Waterproof bag that I like more the more I use it. When you don’t need the bag closed, you can easily fold the lighter-weight roll top section down into the bag and have a very nice looking tote for everyday use.
With the roll top liner pulled out, the RUX Waterproof Bag adds about 50% of its tote bag capacity, and is ready to protect your possessions from the elements. To make the RUX Waterproof Bag waterproof, just roll the top of the bag down at least three times and connect the buckles from either end.
Whether you are using the RUX Waterproof Bag as a dry bag or a tote bag, there is a nylon strap with an aluminum G-hook you can use to keep the main bag body closed, or keep the roll top section compressed down when full.
The lightweight shoulder strap is easily removable, but the smaller handle loops are permanently sewn into the top edge of the bag. To attach the RUX Waterproof Bag to your SUP, you’ll need to use a simple tie down strap or thread your cargo cord through the many different tie down slots placed all the way around the bag.
RUX has also built the Waterproof Bag with integration in mind. On one of the handles you’ll find two plastic tabs where the handle meets the bag. These tabs are designed to connect to RUX’s 70L storage cube on either the inside or outside of the cube depending on your needs.

I really like the RUX Waterproof Bag – even more than I expected I would. Big question – does it keep things dry? Yes, 100%. TPU-coated nylon is a time-tested material and the bag has been working flawlessly for me. But that’s sort of a minimum when it comes to dry bags. RUX could have stopped there, but they didn’t.
The size of this bag is just right. I can easily throw in my water, phone, keys, sunscreen, a snack, and a pack towel, and a wind jacket and not even fill the main compartment of the bag. But it doesn’t feel overly large, either.
The carrying strap is comfortable, the tie down points are easy to use, and the whole thing just looks really, really, nice. I think I’m going to have to keep an eye on it to make sure my wife doesn’t steal it to start using as her everyday bag!
If I could change anything about it, I’d like to have a lighter-color for the interior of the bag, just to make it a bit easier to find things, and It would be great if the bag came with a couple of tie down straps. But overall I’m very pleased with this bag.
