Features and Portability
The Honu e-Pump is a fast-inflating, high-pressure SUP pump that is ready to go anywhere and inflate just about anything you have. The e-Pump comes ready to inflate your Honu iSUPs right out of the box with the correct adapter and gasket already installed on the hose. The pump and all of its accessories fit neatly and easily into the included carrying case with a zippered pocket in the lid to hold the hose, adapters, spare gaskets and more.
The e-Pump has both inflation and deflation connectors on the pump body. The curved top section of the pump features a deep pocket you can use to carry and move the pump itself when it is not in its bag (great for moving from one board to the next). The 12v power cord does stick directly out from the back of the pump. This leaves it a little more exposed during transportation and storage, and in future versions I’d love to see the power cord moved or adapted in such a way that better protects that connection.
One thing that is not present in the Honu e-Pump is an active cooling fan. Heat build up tends to be one of the biggest issues for electric pumps and can cause failures in extreme cases. Active cooling systems help keep the pump cool both during use and between uses (so long as it is plugged in). Especially with a dark exterior color, it is important to keep the Honu e-Pump shaded during use and allow it to cool down for a few minutes between uses. This will help extend the pump motor’s longevity.
Usability and Sound
The Honu e-Pump has a fairly simple user interface, but it has everything you need to easily inflate your board to the correct pressure. The LCD screen indicates the current pressure and units while in use or while idle, and when pressing the + / – buttons to change the pressure, it shows the selected pressure cutoff.
You can adjust the pressure settings for the e-Pump in half-PSI increments between 0.5-22 PSI using the + / – buttons and change the units from PSI to Bar with the “PSI BAR” button. Pressing the Power button turns the pump motor on and off (the screen is on as long as the pump is plugged into a power source).
During inflation, the e-Pump will automatically switch from a high-volume/low-pressure first stage to a low-volume/high-pressure second stage when your SUP reaches around 1 PSI. Like with all electric SUP pumps, the second stage is louder than the first. I measured the volume of the second stage at 86 dB at four feet directly over the pump (essentially head-height when standing next to the pump). Though this is about 4 dB higher than the other electric pumps we’ve tested, in real-world use I did not notice the Honu e-Pump being any louder than any other electric pump I’ve used.
While the interface is easy to use and technically has everything you need, I do prefer to have a slightly larger screen that can display both the instantaneous pressure and the maximum pressure settings at the same time.
Inflation Speed
We test the speed of all of our electric SUP pumps using the same, medium-sized, paddleboard. This board is 11’ x 32” x 6”. The Honu e-Pump was able to inflate our test board to 15 PSI in just 10 minutes, 53 seconds, putting it in second place for the fastest electric pump we’ve tested. The average time across all electric pumps tested is just over 12 minutes. With the majority of Honu’s iSUPs using a thinner, 4.7” profile, it takes even less time to inflate these boards – roughly 7-8 minutes for the Byron and Fairlight iSUPs.Battery
The Honu e-Pump does not have an internal battery power supply and Honu does not currently offer a 12v external battery pack. However, the e-Pump uses a standard 12v “cigarette lighter” plug that is compatible with other 12v power sources.Warranty and Customer Support
Honu offers a one-year warranty on the e-Pump against manufacturing defects. It is also covered by Honu’s 30-day return policy. Honu’s customer support team is easy to reach via phone, email, web form and social media if you have any questions or concerns.
Value
The Honu e-Pump is an extremely fast electric SUP pump and is, so far, the only electric pump we’ve tested that allows for higher inflation pressures (up to 22 PSI). The overall kit is built well and easy to use, and the price point is squarely in the middle of the pack. However if you are purchasing a new Honu iSUP, you can bundle the e-pump with your board and save an extra 10% on the pump. Either way, the Honu e-Pump is a great value for those looking for a fast, high-pressure, electric pump.
Overall Impressions/Review Summary
I’ve been using the Honu e-Pump almost exclusively for a few months now and have been really enjoying it. I do notice how fast it is, and packing it along with me in the car is super easy thanks to the travel bag. My only real concern about the e-Pump is the lack of an active cooling system, however this is not a standard feature on most electric pumps. With basic care and use, I’m looking forward to a great summer season (and beyond) with the Honu e-Pump.
Honu e-Pump FAQ
How long does it take to inflate a paddle board with the Gili 12v electric pump?
The actual time will vary depending on the size of your iSUP. Our medium-sized test board (11’ x 32” x 6”) inflated to 15psi in just under 15 minutes when the pump was plugged into a constant power source, and about 15 and a half minutes when plugged into the Gili battery pack.
Can the Gili 12v Electric Pump inflate more than one iSUP at a time?
The Gili 12v Electric Pump can inflate multiple boards in a row when plugged into a constant power source (like a car or wall adapter) However the maximum recommended run time is 20 minutes before allowing it to cool down. When plugged into the Gili Battery Pack the Gili 12v Pump can reliably inflate 1 iSUP to 15 PSI and a second to 14 PSI. However this will change depending on the exact size of the boards.
How loud is the Gili 12v Electric Pump?
We measured the volume from the Gili 12v Electric Pump at head height and found it to produce 80 dB of sound. This is the quietest pump we have tested to date.
Can I inflate other boards with the Gili 12v Electric Pump?
Yes. The Gili 12v Electric Pump includes a standard Halkey-Roberts valve adapter which will fit most iSUPs. It also includes a variety of other adapters for other inflatable objects.
