Red Paddle Co 12’6 Sport MSL 800 iSUP Review – Overview
The 12’6 Sport MSL 800 is Red Paddle Co’s newly updated version of their classic touring style paddle board. Red has refined their materials, construction, and shapes over the decades to create this top-tier touring SUP.
Additionally, Red has also created a Sport+ version that is a narrower version for even more speed and efficiency, but with less stability.
If you like to explore well beyond the beach, use your paddle board for a cardio workout, or head out for light and fast overnight expeditions, the Red Paddle Co 12’6 Sport MSL is the right board for you.

Red Paddle Co 12’6 Sport MSL 800 Review – Construction and Durability
Red’s MSL 800 construction is a new, lighter version of their legendary material that maintains the same level of construction and performance excellence.
The 12’6 Sport is built with high quality materials and an obsessive level of detail.
Red Paddle Co’s MSL (Monocoque Structural Laminate) is a proprietary set of materials and techniques that is truly unique to Red. The material production and construction process is highly monitored by Red’s technicians and the actual build time of each board is quite lengthy at over three days. But, in the end, this has given Red its reputation for building some of the highest quality and longest lasting inflatable boards in the world.
The new MSL 800 construction starts with a new drop stitch core. The top and bottom of the board use a layer of woven fabric as a lightweight, low-flex alternative to knitted fabrics. Those two layers are connected by thousands of threads in a criss-crossing X pattern rather than a traditional V pattern. This lets Red use fewer threads for a lighter construction while still retaining board rigidity and giving the 12’6 Sport it’s 4.7” thickness.
The outer PVC shell of the board is made using special binders and lamination techniques to create a “1.5 layer” material that is lighter than traditional dual-layer materials, but maintains great stiffness and durability.
The deck and hull of the board are joined together with a glued inner layer of PVC material. While many brands are shifting to welded rails to improve longevity, Red’s strict quality and construction controls extend all the way down to the pot time of their glues once mixed. This ensures the highest quality glued bond possible, and subsequently, Red’s iSUPs are known for being some of the most long-lived boards on the market. So we don’t view Red’s glued construction as any sort of negative against the board’s construction.
The 12’6 Sport also has Red’s RSS Batten system for additional stiffness.
There is a full second layer of reinforced PVC around the rail of the board, and then a third layer through the middle section that creates the pocket for Red’s RSS Batten system. These removable plastic inserts improve a board’s rigidity by around 10% compared to the board without the battens.
With the RSS Battens, deck pad, and other fittings installed, the Red 12’6 Sport weighs in at just 21.8 pounds, which is quite impressive for a 12’6” board.
I couldn’t feel any flex in the 12’6 Sport when standing and paddling normally.
In our standardized bend test, we inflate to a paddle board’s maximum pressure rating up to 20 PSI. With the RSS battens installed and the board inflated to 20 PSI we put 170 pounds of weight in the standing area of the board. The 12’6 Sport bent just 1.61” – which is exactly on “average” for over 150 paddle boards we’ve tested.
But, the 12’6 Sport is only 4.7” thick – any given board will have more flex when it is built thinner, so for this board to easily hold its own against all of the boards we’ve tested (the vast majority of which are 6” thick), is fantastic.
There is a moderate to high amount of flex when bouncing, but you do have to jump on the board to experience it.
I did not notice any flex on the water, while standing, walking, and paddling normally on the 12’6 Sport. I could feel a small amount of flex when sprinting, but not in any amount I felt impacted the board’s performance.
I could create a moderate to high amount of flex when bouncing on the board, and it had a light, but slightly springy, rebound feeling after I stopped bouncing. I believe the RSS battens are doing a good job at keeping the board flex under control, but do create that springy feeling when really pushing it to its limit.
Overall I am really impressed with the Red 12’6 Sport MSL 800 construction. The new materials feel great on the water, and keeping a longer board like this feeling rigid on the water while still only being 4.7” is no easy task.

Red Paddle Co 12’6 Sport MSL 800 iSUP Review – Features, Accessories and Versatility
The 12’6 Sport MSL 800 is purpose-built for paddling long distances at high speeds with moderate amounts of equipment.
The Red Paddle Co. 12’6 Sport is 12’ 6” long, 30” wide, 4.7” thick, and weighs 21.8 pounds with the RSS Battens installed. The maximum recommended weight capacity is 330 pounds. The Sport has a very tapered “torpedo”-like shape with the widest point just behind the center handle for maximum efficiency.
The nose has a narrow, tapered shape that focuses on efficiency and speed with a slight reduction in overall stability and capacity.
There is a padded carrying handle and threaded accessory mount at the nose of the board that you can use with cameras or other small accessories. However it is difficult to reach while on the water. We would like to see an accessory mount placed closer for GPS units or other items that you may need to access while paddling.
The front cargo area is medium sized with three flat elastic straps. The straps can be quickly adjusted for tension or removed entirely. The smaller size of the front two straps does limit the total amount of cargo space while leaving lots of empty space on either side. There is enough room for a medium size dry bag, but the narrow spacing the D-rings makes it harder to tie down larger dry bags for longer overnight trips.
The closest cargo strap has an extra D-ring to create a spot for quickly and securely storing a water bottle.
The center carry handle is nicely padded and easy to use without getting in the way while paddling.
The 12’6 Sport has two additional D-rings near the tail of the board for securing additional cargo. It is nice to see this option here, however we prefer to have four rigging points for any medium or large dry bags or other cargo items.
The tail has a very wide, boxy shape. This is a departure from many touring SUPs that use a smaller, rounded tail shape to help reduce drag at the end of the board. There is also a slight “bump” out at the very end of the tail (visible on the right side of the photo) where the tail actually becomes a little wider just before the end of the board. However, the water release wedge under the tail does make up for this shape (more on that below).
The 12’6 Sport also has a hard water-release wedge under the tail of the board. This release edge breaks the surface tension as water exits behind the board. This release edge does a great job and actually creates an extremely small wake behind the board, even smaller than other touring iSUPs with narrower tails.
There is a single US (Universal Standard) fin box under the tail of the board.
The Red Paddle Co 12’6 Sport MSL 800 comes with a nearly complete kit, but you’ll need to add a paddle and PFD.
The 12’6 Sport is rigged with a feature set that is comparable to other boards in the category. It would be nice to see a slightly expanded size on the front cargo area and additional D-rings at the rear, but overall, there is enough room to securely attach a lightweight overnight camping setup.
The 12’6 Sport also comes with a basic set of high-quality accessories. In the box you’ll receive:
- 12’6 Sport MSL 800 iSUP
- Red Paddle ATB Transformer wheeled backpack
- Coiled ankle leash
- 9” touring-style fin
- Red Paddle Titan II triple-action hand pump
- Waterproof phone case
- Basic repair kit
Red does not offer a paddle option with the 12’6 Sport, but you can check out our list of favorite SUP paddles to pair with the 12’6 Sport and get on the water right away.
Red Paddle Co 12’6 Sport MSL 800 iSUP Review – Stability
The 12’6 Sport MSL 800 is built for maximum speed but still manages great stability for its size class.
The long, tapered shape still provides good stability when held on its edge.
With a shape meant for maximum speed, I fully expected the 12’6 Sport to feel a little tippy or twitchy on the water, but I was very happily disappointed!
Even in heavier chop from large boat wakes, the 12’6 Sport kept a very consistent and predictable feel on the water. I didn’t notice any twitching or tipping. The lower profile of the 4.7” thick board really helps it feel more locked in and adds about a virtual inch of width when it comes to primary stability.
Rocking the board side to side and holding it on its edge was smooth and easy. The board transitioned from rail to rail predictably, and I didn’t notice any catching or twitching as the edges dipped under the water and resurfaced.
Rocking side to side is smooth and predictable.
I also found it easy to walk around on the board and move to the tail for a quick pivot turn. The wide square tail offers a lot of volume and support for confidently lifting the nose of the board out of the water. While there is a change in deck pad texture toward the tail, the 12’6 Sport does not have a raised kick pad. This is usually considered a standard design feature on touring boards as it provides additional control and support when standing at the tail of the board, and gives you a very obvious tactile feedback point to prevent you from accidentally walking off the tail of the board.
Even though the 12’6 Sport is designed as a high-performance touring board, the overall stability is good enough that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to a beginner paddler who is interested in fitness paddling, touring, and even light expedition paddling.
Red Paddle Co 12’6 Sport MSL 800 iSUP Review – Speed
You can read the rest of this section if you want, but the short answer is – this is a high efficiency, high speed paddle board.
The 12’6 Sport has excellent efficiency, cruising speed, and top speeds.
In our speed testing, we put the 12’6 Sport through a high cadence sprint test at 75 strokes per minute and an unlimited stroke rate to find a maximum speed. Using a midrange carbon/hybrid paddle, we found the 12’6 Sport to average 5.4 MPH at a sustained sprinting cadence and 6.1 MPH for a maximum speed. Those are great results for a standard 12’6 x 30” touring SUP.
The 12’6 Sport likewise did well when we evaluated it for cruising/touring speeds and efficiency. At a casual 25 strokes per minute the 12’6 Sport cruised along at 3.0 MPH on average. That cadence is very casual, nearly pausing between strokes and is something you can maintain all day on a long tour. At that cruising speed, a single paddle stroke keeps the board moving for over 24 feet before slowing down, giving it a gliding ratio of 1.9 board-lengths per stroke – an excellent result for a touring SUP.
Red Paddle Co 12’6 Sport MSL 800 iSUP Review – Maneuverability and Tracking
The 12’6 Sport exhibits top-tier tracking performance and still manages typical maneuverability for a touring-style paddle board.
The long, tapered shape does make the 12’6 harder to turn than an all-around board, but is in line with other touring SUPs.
We do all of our testing by focusing on how most people will paddle their boards. While there are lots of ways to turn a board quickly with advanced maneuvers, we’ve found that using basic turning strokes helps truly highlight the differences in maneuverability between boards.
With a simple forward sweep stroke (paddling in an arc from nose to tail), it takes an average of 10 full strokes to turn the 12’6 Sport in a full circle from a standstill. Using a reverse sweep stroke works against the fin and turns the 12’6 Sport in the same circle with just under half the number of strokes (4.75). That is more effort than what you would expect for an all-around iSUP, but is right on par with other touring paddle boards.
The wide tail makes it easy to walk back to the tail of the Sport for a pivot turn when you really need to spin around quickly. I also found it easy to steer the board in smaller increments and make smaller turns when paddling using basic “dabbing” strokes and more advanced cross-bow steering strokes.
The 12’6 Sport has top-notch tracking performance for easy distance paddling.
The 12’6 Sport doesn’t have good tracking performance. It has phenomenal tracking performance. Even when comparing it to other touring-style boards, the 12’6 Sport makes getting from one place to another extremely easy.
In our tracking test, the 12’6 Sport only deviated off course by an average of 4° after taking 10 strokes on a single side of the board. I had to repeat the test more times than normal just to make sure I was even seeing that difference.
Intermediate and advanced paddlers will really appreciate how easy it is to keep paddling on one side of the board for long periods of time, and even beginner paddlers will have to switch sides less frequently.
The 12’6 Sport comes with a single 9” touring-style fin.
The included 9” touring-style fin is a great match for the 12’6 Sport. The rigid construction and high surface area help give it excellent tracking performance, and the location is just right to keep the board easy to maneuver when you need it to. It really should be used as an example when explaining why more fins doesn’t necessarily mean better tracking (or fewer fins mean worse tracking).
With seriously impressive tracking performance and very reasonable maneuverability I find that the Red 12’6 Sport is perfectly balanced as a touring paddle board.
Red Paddle Co 12’6 Sport MSL 800 Review – Warranty and Customer Support

Red Paddle Co 12’6 Sport MSL 800 iSUP Review – Final Thoughts
The 12’6 Sport MSL 800 is a fantastic touring and fitness paddle board.
I really like the 12’6 Sport. It’s fast, efficient, stable, and tracks straight with incredible ease. My only real complaints about this board are with the cargo system, and even then it’s very minor. It would be nice to see a few more D-rings on the tail of the board and another threaded mount that’s easier to reach, but all of that is quite minor or user-adjustable if it’s really important for you. Red’s paddle boards are built and shaped extremely well, and as such they do have a higher price tag, but if you are looking for a no-compromises touring SUP, the Red 12’6 Sport MSL 800 should be at the top of your list.
