I love destination paddling – hitting the water with the intent to paddle far (fast) and explore new places. Nothing does that better than a touring / sea kayak. The Old Town Castine 140 offers efficiency, speed, capacity, and approachability for destination paddlers of all skill levels.
The high-volume and high-rocker nose easily handles choppy conditions on open water and large lakes while the piercing bow and slim stern shed water and keep you tracking straight with ease.
The unique sliding day hatch inside the cockpit keeps snacks and other small items close by, but out of the way. There’s also separate bulkhead compartments in the bow and stern for additional gear for longer trips, and plenty of deck rigging for a spare paddle and bilge pump. Why Choose a Hard Shell Kayak Over an Inflatable Kayak?
While both are great options for most paddlers, hard shell kayaks can offer certain benefits that inflatable boats can’t match to the same degree. Being able to take your kayak off your car/trailer and immediately put it in the water is a big one. Hard shell kayaks can also offer certain features that inflatables may not be able to like flush-mounts and rail-mounts for fishing equipment or dry-storage hatches for overnight equipment. Hard shell kayaks can also be shaped precisely for high degrees of performance for touring/sea kayaking and whitewater kayaking. Intermediate and advanced kayakers can use this performance shaping to paddle places and distances nearly impossible for inflatable kayaks.
Are There Downsides to Hard Shell Kayaks?
Like with everything else there is always an upside and a downside. The downside with hard shell kayaks comes from their weight, cost, and in transportation and storage. Generally hard shell kayaks are around 2x the weight of an inflatable of the same size/category, and can go even higher. Most hard shell kayaks are also on the more expensive side. While there are a few options around or under $800, most are well over $1000 and can easily push into $3000+ for certain models, while most high-quality inflatable kayaks are in the $600-$1200 range. Lastly, it can be difficult to store and transport a hard shell kayak. You’ll need somewhere to hang or stack an 8-16’ long boat at home, and a way to get it onto and secured to your car to get it to the water. Both can add significant cost to getting started kayaking.
Recommended Gear for Kayaking
Most kayaks come with very few additional accessories. A few (Nixy, Thurso and Bote) include kits with paddles and more, but otherwise you’ll be left to figure out what other items you need to safely get paddling on the water.
- Paddle – Choosing a paddle can be just as personal as choosing the kayak. For most users in a traditional Inflatable Kayak you’ll want a paddle that is between 240-260cm long with narrower “low-angle” blades. For kayakers in narrower boats (30-34”) you’ll want a paddle between 220-240cm long.
